Elderberry This past summer, 2008, on one of my expeditions I happened to come across some wild American Elderberry growing in a marshy area. I wasn’t sure what it was but I ate some of the tiny dark purple berries anyway. Of course, I don’t recommend eating wild berries if you aren’t sure of the species and I recently found out that the red elderberries are toxic. The wild elderberries were sweet and the seeds were tiny and crunchy. Only the black/blue/purple elderberries are safe to eat and to use medicinally, along with the flowers. Elderberry has been used medicinally for over 2,500 years for the natural treatment of colds and influenza. This medicinal plant contains different acids such as linolenic acid as well as alkaloid which may cause nausea and anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants. Containing a high amount of immune enhancing vitamin C and Potassium, elder is a great alterative and is commonly used for rheumatic pain and inflammation. In the 1980’s, Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu and Dr.Jean Linderman conducted scientific testing which proves elderberry’s antiviral properties. They isolated two active constituents which renders the virus unable to replicate itself. During a double blind study on influenza, 75% of the patients who received elderberry extract were significantly improved after 48 hours and completely healed after 72 hours compared with six days recovery of the other group. |
