Iodine

A lack of iodine can have a severe impact on the thyroid gland.  The thyroid gland uses iodine to manufacture thyroid hormones which are crucial for metabolism.  Without enough iodine, the thyroid gland swells in an attempt to trap more iodine.  The sweeling of the thyroid gland is known as goiter.  Fluoride, which is an ingredient in many pesticides is more poisonous than lead.  In fact, over fluoridation of water is one of the sources of acute fluoride poisonings.  Even doses as low as 2mg per day, which is consumed by many Americans via tap water, were found effective at reducing thyroid function and fluoride was once used by European doctors (until the 1970's) to reduce thyroid function in hyperthyroid patients for this very reason. The metabolism slows dramatically, leading to fatigue and weight gain.

Iodine may also be an important immune stimulant.  Research suggests iodine may help deactivate bacteria.
