Molybdenum

Molybdenum is an important trace mineral for many enzyme systems.  Molybdenum is essential for xanthine oxidase, which is responsible for the metabolism of uric acid, and the transport of iron from the liver.  Xanthine oxidase also has anti-oxidant properties and helps protect cells and tissue irritation by oxygen and hydroxyl free radicals.  As part of the enzyme nitrate reductase, molybdenum functions as a detoxifier and counteracts the actions of nitrosamines.  Nitrosamines are known carcinogens, and molybdenum may help to prevent cancer.

As part of aldehyde oxidase, molybdenum assists in the oxidation and metabolism of carbohydrates and other aldehydes.  As part of sulfite oxidase, molybdenum help to detoxify sulfites from the body.  Sulfites are used to preserve food, and are potential carcinogens.  Sulfites have been shown to cause nausea, diarrhea, and trigger asthma attacks.  High tissue levels of molybdenum can counteract sulfites.

Foods high in Molybdenum include:

Lima beans                            Wheat germ
Oats                                      Buckwheat
Green beans                          Lentils
Potatoes                                Spinach
Cauliflower                            Peas

Molybdenum deficiency symptoms include:

Anorexia                               Cancer
Vision problems                    Rapid heart rate
Depression
