Potassium

Potassium is an important macro mineral in both cellular and electrical functions.  Potassium carries a slight positive charge, and works with the other electrolytes to create nerve impulses.  The potassium and sodium balance is crucial to healthy nervous system function and generation of nerve impulses, as well as healthy blood pressure.  Potassium can be a natural cure for high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, and nervous system disorders.

Along with sodium, potassium regulates water balance and acid-base balance.  In nerve cells, the sodium-potassium flux generates electrical potential, which generates muscle contraction and regulates heartbeat.  Potassium can be a natural cure for arrhythmias.  Because of potassium’s role in muscle contraction, potassium is a regulator of blood pressure.  Increasing potassium intake can be a more effective alternative therapy than reducing sodium intake.

Foods high in potassium include:

Spinach                               Parsley
Mustard greens                   Peas
Broccoli                              Lima beans
Tomatoes                            Oranges
Bananas                              Avocadoes
Pumpkin seeds                    Salmon
Flounder                             Cod

Symptoms of potassium deficiency include:

Fatigue                               Irregular heartbeat
Muscle weakness               Slow reflexes
Dry skin                             Acne
Nervous disorders              Elevated blood sugar
Bone fragility                      Insomnia
