Vitamins When it comes to nutrition, Vitamins are the first thing most people think of. A, B, C, D, E, and K are the most popular letters in the world of natural health. Our bodies have the ability to manufacture some of these vitamins, but most of them must be obtained through the diet, or by taking vitamin supplements. I usually recommend supplementation of the water soluble vitamins only, as these are constantly being flushed from the body. The water soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B-complex vitamins. The body constantly flushes whatever it is not using at the time, this is why vitamin and the B vitamins must be replaced. The fat soluble vitamins require the presence of fat to be properly absorbed. The fat soluble vitamins include vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and Vitamin K. The body will use what it needs and store the remainder, primarily in the liver. As I said, the body has the ability to manufacture certain vitamins. Vitamin D is production requires sunlight to synthesize vitamin D from cholesterol in the skin.. Certain stains of probiotics (beneficial bacteria in the large intestine) have the ability to manufacture certain B vitamins, and vitamin K which is needed for normal clotting of the blood. Vitamin A is primarily found in yellow, red, or orange vegetables as carotenoids. Beta carotene is converted to vitamin A in the liver. Apricots are also high in beta carotene, and fish oil and dairy products are high in vitamin A. Most of the B vitamins are found in the highest quantities in whole grains, especially the bran and the germ. B12 is the exception, it is primarily found in red meat. Vitamin D is found in dairy products and fish liver oil. Most fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of vitamin C, the highest being the amalaki fruit. Vitamin E is primarily found in green leafy vegetable, seeds, and nuts, almond being one of the best sources. |
